Here’s how Luke Wells scores his! An Imperious 175* as Lancashire chase 329 to beat Warwickshire
Lancashire opening batsman and B3 Pro Ambassador Luke Wells led the way with a superb unbeaten 175 not out as the Red Rose chased down 329 on the final day of their County Championship match against the current Division One Champions.
Luke’s knock demanded patience and skill and was far from plain sailing. He started the day on 2 from the previous days play and had to battle really hard in the first session, which saw Lancashire in jeopardy at 93-4.
He hit 22 fours and a six from 280 balls and batted beautifully alongside Rob Jones (66) in a fifth wicket stand of 162 in 45 overs. Lancashire reached their lofty target for the loss of six wickets with four overs to spare.
Patience and Skill
The thing that was so striking about Luke’s mammoth effort was his patience and decision making.
A common fault in young and club players is that they think they need to chase a lot harder than they actually need to. This often results in batters taking unnecessary risks and playing unnecessary shots. Luke took his time, saw off the shine and the new bowlers and when the ball was old and the bowlers tired, he picked up the pace in accordance with the demands of the scoreboard.
Here is an indication of how Luke paced his innings and held his nerve whilst wickets were tumbling at the other end.
- 27 overs – Lancs 53/3 (Luke Wells 30* off 80 balls)
- Lunch 33 overs – Lancs 87/3 (Luke Wells 44* off 102 balls)
- 45 overs – Lancs 106/4 (Luke Wells 54* off 138 balls)
- Tea 65 overs – Lancs 167/4 (Luke Wells 88* off 193 balls)

- 87 overs – Lancs 270/5 (Luke Wells 151* off 261 balls)
